Growing up my father used to say – but seriously – in response to questions regarding his beliefs in higher powers, “I’m a Calathumpian”. Now he stands by the fact that a Calathumpian is a person who believes in more than one thing, but after a bit of looking around I have come to find this term quite an illusive character.

Callithumpian finds its origins in the United States of America (gallithumpian in Britain).

…designating a society of social reformers, then in reference to “noisy disturbers of elections and meetings,” and most commonly “a band of discordant instruments.”

The hunt for the true meaning for this word lead me to Latin derivatives of a rubbish bin and also a liquid strainer. It has proven to be a bit of a goose chase, albeit fitting, as whatever the true origin of Calathumpian, it has been noted that the number of different meanings and ways of spelling this word is vast.

So in true tradition of Calathumpianism, this blog will strain all the rubbish from Peter Wildman’s mind to disturb as much of society as was intended in the minds of the pioneers of this ranting movement.
